The best time to surf in the Philippines depends on which part of the country you plan to visit. Siargao generally has its strongest and most consistent surf from September through November. La Union is usually better from November through March, while Baler commonly receives its more dependable Pacific swell from August through October.
For an experienced surfer planning a dedicated Philippines surf trip, I would choose Siargao in October. For beginners, longboarders, or travelers who want easier conditions, La Union between December and February is often the more practical choice.
The Philippines does not have one nationwide surf season. Its surf destinations face different coastlines and respond to different weather patterns, so choosing the right region is more important than choosing a month in isolation.
The Best Time to Surf in the Philippines by Destination
The most useful seasonal breakdown is:
- Siargao: September through November
- La Union: November through March
- Baler: August through October
- Palawan: Inconsistent and highly dependent on local swell
Siargao and Baler face the Pacific, while La Union sits on the western side of Luzon. This means the same month can produce good surf in one region and weak conditions in another.
Before choosing dates, decide which destination best matches your ability and preferred wave type. My main guide to surfing in the Philippines compares the country’s primary surf regions.
September Through November: Best for Siargao
September through November is generally the best time to surf in Siargao.
During this period, Pacific swell reaches the island’s east-facing reefs more consistently. More breaks begin working, and experienced surfers have a better chance of finding the powerful reef waves for which Siargao is known.
Cloud 9 is the island’s most famous wave, but it is a shallow, fast, advanced reef break. Visiting during peak season does not mean every surfer should paddle out there. Siargao has other breaks that may be better suited to intermediates or improving surfers, depending on the daily conditions.
September
September often marks the beginning of Siargao’s most dependable surf period.
The island can receive regular swell, but weather conditions may be unsettled. Wind and rain can affect surf quality, and tropical systems may create days that are powerful but disorganized.
September is a good choice for surfers who want consistent swell and are willing to accept variable weather.
You can compare Siargao with other seasonal destinations in my guide to the best places to surf in September.
October
October is my top month for an experienced Siargao surf trip.
The main swell season is established, multiple reef breaks may be active, and the island generally has its strongest surf atmosphere. This is the month to choose when wave quality matters more than finding the easiest conditions.
The downside is that larger swells can make many breaks unsuitable for beginners. Strong currents, shallow reefs, and heavy waves require good judgment and local knowledge.
Read my guide to the best places to surf in October if you are comparing Siargao with other international destinations.
November
November can provide a better balance for intermediate surfers.
Siargao may still receive good Pacific swell, but conditions can be slightly less intense than during the strongest October windows. This makes November worth considering when you want the Siargao experience without deliberately targeting the largest waves.
For more detailed planning, see my guides to surfing in Siargao, Philippines and surfing Cloud 9 in the Philippines.
November Through March: Best for La Union
La Union’s main surf season generally runs from November through March.
The main surf area is around San Juan, where north and northwest swell can create rideable waves during the northern winter. December through February is the most dependable part of the season.
La Union is a useful alternative when Siargao is outside its strongest surf window. It is also one of the easier choices for beginners and longboarders because the main surf area has widely available lessons, rentals, and approachable waves during moderate conditions.
November and December
November is the beginning of La Union’s more active surf period. Swell may still be inconsistent early in the month, but conditions generally improve as winter develops.
December is usually a stronger choice. It offers a better chance of seasonal swell while remaining suitable for a wider range of abilities than peak-season Siargao.
January and February
January and February are two of the safest months for planning a La Union surf trip.
The region is more likely to receive usable north swell, and conditions often suit beginners, intermediates, and longboarders. Larger days still occur, but the main surf area is generally easier to approach than Siargao’s advanced reef breaks.
These months are also among the best choices for a first Philippines surf trip. Travelers can compare them with other destinations in my guides to the best places to surf in January and best places to surf in February.
March
March can still produce surf, but consistency usually begins to decline as the main winter pattern weakens.
I would choose December through February over March when surfing is the primary reason for the trip. March makes more sense when you are already visiting Luzon and want to add a few surf days.

August Through October: Best for Baler
Baler generally receives its most dependable surf from August through October.
Its location on the eastern side of Luzon exposes it to Pacific swell. Sabang Beach is the main surf area, while stronger waves may appear at other breaks around the Aurora coastline during favorable conditions.
August
August can be a good month for surfers who want Pacific waves before the main Siargao season reaches its strongest point.
Swell becomes more frequent, although rain and changing wind can affect quality. Smaller days may suit beginners at Sabang, while larger swells can make the beach much more difficult.
You can compare Baler with other options in the best places to surf in August.
September and October
September and October are usually Baler’s strongest months.
These months offer the best chance of consistent swell, but they also bring a greater possibility of heavy rain, strong wind, and tropical weather. A larger forecast does not always mean better waves because storm conditions can make the ocean disorganized.
Experienced surfers may prefer this period, while beginners should avoid choosing dates solely because the swell is expected to be larger.
Read my guide to surfing in Baler, Philippines for a closer look at the area.
Best Time for Beginners
The best time to surf in the Philippines for beginners is usually when the waves are smaller and the destination has reliable instruction.
My first choice would be La Union between December and February. The region has an established lesson scene, easy board rentals, and a seasonal window that often produces manageable surf.
Siargao can also work for beginners, but I would avoid planning a first surf trip around the strongest October swells. Many of the island’s famous waves break over reef, and the best beginner conditions may occur outside the most powerful forecast periods.
Baler is suitable when Sabang Beach is small, but August through October can also bring strong Pacific surf.
The best beginner windows are:
- La Union: December through February
- Siargao: Smaller days outside peak swell events
- Baler: Moderate conditions at Sabang Beach
For more guidance, read surfing in the Philippines for beginners.
Best Time for Longboarding
Longboarders should generally avoid the largest days of each destination’s peak season.
La Union is the simplest recommendation for a longboard trip. December through February can bring waves with enough shape to be enjoyable without the power of Siargao’s more demanding reef breaks.
Siargao has longboardable waves, but the correct break depends heavily on swell size, reef depth, tide, and wind. A smaller day before or after the strongest September-to-November swell windows may be more suitable than peak season.
Baler can work for longboards at Sabang during moderate surf. A strong Pacific swell can make paddling and controlling a larger board difficult.
The most practical longboard windows are:
- La Union: December through February
- Siargao: Smaller periods around the main season
- Baler: Moderate days from August through October

Is the Rainy Season the Best Surf Season?
In several Philippine surf regions, the most consistent swell overlaps with wetter and stormier weather.
This is especially true for Siargao and Baler. September and October may bring excellent waves, but they can also bring heavy rain, poor wind, unsafe currents, and disrupted travel.
The strongest surf season is therefore not always the easiest time to visit.
Experienced surfers may accept greater weather risk in exchange for more consistent swell. Beginners, longboarders, and travelers combining surfing with a broader vacation may prefer slightly smaller waves during a more manageable seasonal window.
When planning around the rainy season, leave several days available for surfing rather than expecting perfect conditions on one specific morning.
Best Month by Surfer Type
For experienced surfers, October in Siargao is the strongest overall recommendation.
For intermediate surfers, November in Siargao or December through February in La Union provides a better balance between wave quality and manageable conditions.
For beginners, January or February in La Union is the safest general choice.
For longboarders, December through February in La Union is also the most practical period.
For surfers visiting Baler, September offers good swell potential but requires flexibility around weather and changing conditions.
My Final Recommendation
The best time to surf in the Philippines is:
- September through November for Siargao
- November through March for La Union
- August through October for Baler
Choose Siargao in October when you are an experienced surfer looking for the country’s strongest dedicated surf trip.
Choose La Union from December through February when you want easier waves, lessons, or longboard-friendly conditions.
Choose Baler between August and October when you want Pacific swell on Luzon and are comfortable planning around rain and variable weather.
There is no single perfect month for the entire country. Pick the surf destination first, then choose the part of its season that matches your experience and preferred wave size.
