The best places to surf in February depend on what you want from the trip. Warm water can come with heavy reef waves, while clean weather can come with smaller swell. I would start with the kind of session I actually want, not the biggest wave on a map.
For me, that usually means choosing between three versions of the month: easy tropical mornings, warm water with real winter power, or colder point breaks that justify packing a wetsuit. Once that decision is made, the destination list becomes much shorter.
Excellent beginner bases and serious winter lineups operate at the same time, sometimes within the same country. The season may be right, but the individual break can still be wrong.
Best Places to Surf in February, Sorted by the Session You Want
For warm, forgiving surf, I would begin with southern Sri Lanka or Pacific Costa Rica. For warm water with more force, I would look at northwest Puerto Rico or Baler. If colder water is acceptable, Morocco and San Diego move to the front.
Those choices are not interchangeable. A first-time surfer, a traveling longboarder, and an experienced shortboarder can all have a good February, but they should not book the same coast for the same reasons.
I Want Warm Water and a Forgiving Morning
This is the most useful starting point for beginners, longboarders, and couples with different ability levels. It narrows the field to places where the trip can still work when nobody wants to paddle into a powerful winter reef.
Southern Sri Lanka keeps the daily routine simple
February falls within the more settled season on Sri Lanka’s south and southwest coasts. Weligama is the obvious starting point for lessons, while Midigama and Ahangama give improving surfers access to reefs, points, and more defined walls. Short distances make it possible to choose a wave each morning without rebuilding the trip.
I would use the guide to where to surf in Sri Lanka before choosing a hotel. Weligama is convenient but busy. Midigama feels more surf-focused, while Hikkaduwa combines waves with a larger town and more developed tourism.
For a first trip, southern Sri Lanka offers a clear path from lessons to independent practice. The guides to beginner surfing in Sri Lanka and the best longboard waves in Sri Lanka separate the soft options from more demanding reefs.
Pacific Costa Rica favors the trip, not the swell chase
February is part of the dry season on Costa Rica’s Pacific side. Roads are easier and a mixed surf-and-nature trip is simple to organize. It is not the strongest south-swell period, which can suit longboarders who do not need overhead waves every morning.
Nosara is the polished choice, with consistent beach-break exposure, rentals, and lessons. It is also expensive and popular. Playa Grande and Tamarindo offer a different balance of beach access and nightlife. The official Costa Rica climate guide places the Pacific dry season from December through March.
I would choose Costa Rica if wildlife and a shorter journey from North America mattered as much as the surf. Sri Lanka wins for a compact coastline and more affordable routine. The guides to the Costa Rica longboard season and beginner surfing in Costa Rica go deeper.
I Want Warm Water, but I Do Not Want Mellow
Warm water does not automatically mean forgiving surf. February sends meaningful winter energy toward Puerto Rico, while the northeast monsoon keeps the Pacific side of Luzon active. Both trips can be excellent, but neither should be sold as effortless tropical surfing.
Northwest Puerto Rico compresses a winter surf trip
The coast between Rincón, Aguadilla, and Isabela puts points, reefs, and beach breaks within a manageable drive. February is firmly inside the Atlantic surf season. A smaller day may open approachable options, while a strong north swell can turn the same coast into advanced territory.
I like Puerto Rico because it does not require a two-week trip from the mainland United States. A rental car and local advice still matter. Named breaks fill quickly, reefs punish careless entries, and swell direction matters.
This suits an intermediate or advanced surfer who wants winter swell without cold water. Beginners can find lessons, but should not assume a famous Rincón break will always have a safe inside corner.
Baler is still in season after its biggest winter pulse
Baler, on the Pacific side of Luzon, receives swell during the northeast monsoon season. December and January often carry the strongest reputation, but February remains within the useful surf window. Sabang Beach provides the most accessible base, while the wider Aurora coast gives experienced surfers reasons to explore beyond the main beachfront.
The tradeoff is weather. A surf season driven by monsoon energy can bring gray skies, wind, rain, and rough water along with waves. I would choose Baler because I wanted to experience a Filipino surf town, not because I expected a polished tropical beach holiday. My guide to the best time to surf in the Philippines explains how different coasts respond to different seasonal patterns.
Longboarders should also compare Baler with La Union. La Union can offer a softer social surf trip, while Baler feels more exposed to Pacific energy. The broader guide to surfing in the Philippines helps place both within the country instead of treating Siargao as the only option.
I Will Wear a Wetsuit if the Waves Justify It
February becomes a different month when warm water is removed from the requirements. Morocco offers the stronger point-break journey. San Diego offers flexibility, familiar logistics, and enough coastline to adjust when winter swell is too large or too directional.
Morocco makes patience part of the plan
Winter is the reason many surfers travel to Morocco. The Taghazout area is known for long right points, but a good February trip should include the surrounding beach breaks and sheltered alternatives. Anchor Point may be the image that sells the ticket, yet it should not be the only wave holding the itinerary together.
I would stay mobile, watch the forecast, and accept that the best-known points can be crowded or beyond my ability on a solid swell. Surfing in Taghazout works best when you see the town as a base for a section of coast, not a guarantee that one celebrated wave will cooperate every day.
San Diego gives winter swell several places to land
San Diego is the practical February choice for a West Coast trip. North and west swells can reach reefs, beach breaks, and more protected corners differently. Black’s may be powerful, Tourmaline is the obvious longboard gathering place, and La Jolla Shores can be more approachable when conditions stay modest.
The water requires a full suit, mornings can be chilly, and rain can create water-quality concerns near runoff. Crowds are part of the equation too. Still, the coastline gives you more ways to revise the plan than a trip centered on one remote point. Check the best time to surf in San Diego and the San Diego longboard guide before deciding where to stay.
One Island Where Skill Changes the Coast
Barbados is a useful seventh choice because one small island can produce very different February trips. Atlantic winter swell reaches the north, west, and east coasts, while the south coast has more approachable waves and established surf schools. Freights Bay is the longboard-friendly name most travelers encounter. Bathsheba’s Soup Bowl is the serious, consistent east-coast reef.
I would not move between those spots as if they were simply two stops on a beach tour. Soup Bowl is powerful, shallow, and exposed to trade wind. It belongs to confident surfers when it is active. Barbados makes sense for a mixed-ability group only when everyone is willing to surf the coast that fits them, rather than insisting on sharing one lineup.
My February Shortlist
For a first surf trip, I would choose southern Sri Lanka. With a longboard and a partner who also wants wildlife and dry weather, I would take Costa Rica. For a shorter warm-water trip with more serious waves, Puerto Rico is the efficient answer. Baler is the more adventurous choice if the Philippines itself is part of the appeal. Barbados works when a group needs more than one level of surf.
If point breaks are the entire purpose of the trip, Morocco wins. If I wanted to keep the logistics simple from the western United States, I would watch the forecast and drive to San Diego. That is the useful way to read February: choose the morning you want, then choose the coast that can realistically provide it.
