Most sessions last about two hours and include the surfboard, rash guard and basic safety instruction, but age limits, group size and the exact learning beach vary by school.
That makes the first decision surprisingly simple.
Do not begin by choosing the cheapest surf school.
Begin by deciding whether Kīhei or Ukumehame makes more sense for where you are staying, then compare the lesson format available there.

Kīhei Has Maui’s Biggest Concentration of Beginner Surf Lessons
For someone staying in South Maui, Kīhei is the first place I would investigate.
Several established surf schools teach from Kalama Park and the neighboring Cove area, which means you can choose among different prices and lesson formats without driving across the island.
Surf Shack Maui, Learn to Surf Maui, Maui WaveRiders, Maui Beach Boys and Waves Hawaii all currently advertise Kīhei surf instruction.
That concentration is useful because a first-time surfer does not need a destination with the most famous wave. You need a school that regularly teaches beginners at a suitable break and can put you on equipment that makes learning easier.
The Cove Is the Kīhei Wave Beginners Should Know
The Cove sits at the southern end of Kalama Park and has become one of Maui’s established learn-to-surf locations.
Surfline describes the normal waves here as slow and rolling and specifically identifies The Cove as one of Maui’s better places to learn to surf.
It is usually small, relatively mellow and filled with surf schools.
The break favors south and southwest swell, with medium tide and light north-northeast through east-southeast wind generally useful.
There is an important detail beginners should understand: the shoreline looks approachable, but Surfline identifies the surf bottom as reef.
That is another reason I would take a lesson before renting a board independently.
Maui County also notes that Cove Beach Park does not have a lifeguard on duty, so the presence of surf schools should not be confused with official water supervision.
A Strong Summer Swell Can Change The Cove
The Cove’s beginner reputation is based on its ordinary conditions, not a guarantee that every day is mellow.
South Maui becomes more exposed to Southern Hemisphere swell during Hawaii’s summer surf season.
Surfline notes that The Cove becomes much more consistent during summer and can turn on during larger southwest swells.
That means a beach that works perfectly for a lesson one morning can have considerably more power during another part of the trip.
I would let the surf school determine whether The Cove is appropriate rather than booking based on the assumption that “beginner beach” means beginner conditions every day.

What Maui Surf Lessons Cost Right Now
The current price range is wide enough that I would compare exactly what you are buying.
Maui Beach Boys currently lists a two-hour group lesson at $85 per person, semi-private instruction at $119 and private instruction at $199. Its group rate requires at least four students.
Surf Shack Maui currently advertises two-hour Kīhei lessons from $88 per person.
Learn to Surf Maui currently lists its two-hour Kīhei group lesson from $99 and private instruction from $159.
Maui Surfer Girls currently lists a two-hour group lesson at $115, semi-private instruction at $160 and a one-on-one lesson at $225.
Waves Hawaii Surf School currently starts group lessons at $99, semi-private lessons at $165 and private instruction at $225.
These are published rates checked in September 2026. Taxes, booking fees, promotions and availability can change, so verify the final price directly before paying.
$85 and $225 Lessons Are Not the Same Product
The difference is usually not that one instructor knows how to surf and another does not.
You are often paying for instructor attention, smaller ratios, age flexibility and how personalized the session can become.
A healthy adult who swims confidently and simply wants to try surfing may be perfectly happy in a group.
A child, nervous swimmer or returning surfer who wants specific technical feedback has a much stronger reason to pay for private instruction.
If two people are taking the lesson together, semi-private pricing deserves particular attention. It can give a couple or two friends their own smaller teaching setup without paying for two separate instructors.
Learn to Surf Maui Makes the Kīhei Lesson Easy to Compare
Learn to Surf Maui currently teaches from Kalama Park in Kīhei.
The published group rate starts at $99, while private instruction starts at $159.
Both formats run for two hours.
Group lessons currently start at age 11, while private lessons are available from age five.
The lesson includes the surfboard, leash, rash guard and booties, and participants are expected to know how to swim and feel comfortable in the water.
I would compare this school if I wanted a straightforward Kīhei option where the inclusions, ages and lesson duration are clearly published before booking.
Surf Shack Maui Is One of the Lower-Priced Kīhei Options
Surf Shack Maui currently advertises two-hour lessons from $88 per person.
The school teaches from the Kalama Park/Cove area and currently offers morning lesson times at 8:00 and 10:30.
I would include it in the comparison if price matters and you are already staying around Kīhei or Wailea.
The important thing is to compare the exact lesson type and student ratio offered on your date rather than treating the starting rate as the entire story.
Maui WaveRiders Gives Kīhei Another Option
Maui WaveRiders currently offers Kīhei surf lessons from $105.
Its Kīhei lessons run for two hours and are available for ages four and older, with private and semi-private instruction emphasized in the current program.
This can make it worth comparing for a family with younger children who may not qualify for another school’s open group format.
Ukumehame Is the Other Maui Lesson Zone Worth Understanding
You do not have to take a surf lesson in Kīhei.
Ukumehame Beach Park sits between South Maui and the main West Maui resort areas and is used by several established surf schools.
This is particularly relevant if you are staying around Kāʻanapali or elsewhere on the west side and do not want to drive all the way to Kīhei simply because most online searches mention The Cove.
Maui Surfer Girls uses Ukumehame as its primary teaching location, and Maui Beach Boys also currently operates west-side instruction there.
The lesson decision on Maui is therefore better framed as Kīhei versus Ukumehame than simply “Which surf school has the most reviews?”
Maui Surfer Girls Uses Small Ratios at Ukumehame
Maui Surfer Girls teaches at Ukumehame Beach Park, roughly between Kīhei and the West Maui resort area.
Its current two-hour group lesson starts at $115 and uses a maximum four-to-one student-to-instructor ratio.
Group lessons currently start at age 13.
Semi-private lessons start at $160 per person with a maximum three-to-one ratio and are available from age 11.
Private instruction starts at $225 and is available from age five.
Boards, rash guards and booties are included.
This is the kind of program I would compare if instructor ratio matters more to me than obtaining the absolute lowest advertised rate.
Maui Beach Boys Lets You Choose South or West Side
Maui Beach Boys is useful because it currently teaches from both Kalama Park in Kīhei and Ukumehame Beach Park on the west side.
Its published two-hour rates are currently $85 for a group lesson, $119 per person semi-private and $199 private, before the listed recreation fee and Hawaii tax.
The school supplies the board, rash guard, booties and instructor.
The current group format requires at least four students, so a solo traveler should not assume the $85 price will automatically be available on every date.
Families Need to Read the Age Rules Before Comparing Prices
The cheapest Maui surf lesson may disappear from consideration once you add a young child.
Learn to Surf Maui currently requires group students to be at least 11 but accepts children from age five for private instruction.
Maui Surfer Girls sets its standard group minimum at 13, semi-private at 11 and private at five.
Maui WaveRiders currently advertises its Kīhei program for ages four and older.
That means I would search by the youngest surfer’s age first, then compare price.
A family of adults and teenagers may have plenty of group choices. A family with a five-year-old may need a private or specially structured lesson.
Most Maui Beginner Lessons Run About Two Hours
Two hours is the most common format among the Maui schools I would compare.
That does not mean you spend every minute riding waves.
A useful first lesson should include a land briefing covering board position, the pop-up, basic ocean awareness, safety and what to do when you fall.
The remainder of the session moves into the water, where repetition matters more than complicated technique.
I would rather have a school spend ten or fifteen useful minutes explaining the ocean than rush everyone into the water merely to advertise more surf time.
Your First Board Should Be Boringly Easy to Ride
A large beginner board is an advantage, not something to graduate from as quickly as possible.
Extra length and volume make paddling easier, help you enter small waves earlier and give you more stability once you stand.
That creates more successful attempts during a limited lesson.
If the school puts you on a large soft-top or another stable beginner shape, I would stay on similar equipment for the next practice session rather than immediately renting a shortboard.

Book Near Your Hotel Unless There Is a Good Reason Not To
Maui is large enough that lesson location should influence the booking.
If you are staying in Kīhei or Wailea, I would begin with Kalama Park and The Cove.
If you are staying on the west side, I would compare Ukumehame-based instruction before committing to a cross-island morning drive.
A slightly more expensive lesson twenty minutes away may create a better vacation day than saving a few dollars and spending much longer in the car before and after two hours in the ocean.

Do Not Pick the Lesson Time by Sunrise Alone
Morning lessons are popular on Maui for good reasons.
Heat is lower and wind is often lighter earlier in the day.
But the actual wave still depends on swell, tide and local wind.
Many schools publish morning times, including 8:00 and 10:30 sessions, while others also teach later.
I would ask the school whether one available time looks materially better for a first-time surfer during my dates instead of automatically choosing the earliest slot.
One Lesson Is Enough to Find Out Whether You Like Surfing
A single Maui surf lesson can give you the experience most vacationers want.
You can learn the basic position, paddle, stand with assistance and hopefully ride several waves toward shore.
What one lesson cannot do is make you independent in the ocean.
That comes from learning to recognize waves, paddle into them without being pushed, control the board around other surfers and understand which conditions are appropriate.
If the first session goes well, I would rather repeat the same learning area and similar board than spend the next lesson driving across Maui to surf somewhere more famous.
The Maui Lesson Decision Can Be Reduced to Three Questions
Where are you staying? Start with Kīhei if you are based in South Maui and Ukumehame if that makes more sense from the west side.
How old is the youngest surfer? Group age limits vary enough that this can immediately narrow the schools.
How much instructor attention do you want? Group instruction can keep the price around $85 to $115 at several schools, while private lessons cost considerably more but give one surfer the coach’s full attention.
Once those answers are clear, choosing a Maui surf lesson becomes much easier.
